OBJECT DESCRIPTION AND IMAGE SESSION

NGC 6716 is a young open star cluster in the constellation of Sagittarius. It is situated about 10 degrees south of the galactic plane. The cluster contains fewer stars with a rather poor concentration ratio. According Ruprecht classification is a Type IV - 1p open cluster which means that the stars are not well detached from the surrounding field and that most stars have similar apparent brightness. NGC 6716 is very young with an estimated age of 100 million years old.

The cluster was discovered by British mathematician and astronomer John Herschel in 1830 a few years before his departing to South Africa in November 1833.

The image was cropped just to center the object in the middle of the frame so it is not the natural frame but a 1 x 0.66 degrees.
